WPVCA 2024/25 Season Officially Launched

by Feroz Shaik

Led by the newly elected Executive Committee under Chairperson Fuzlin Levy-Hassen, the WPVCA season launch welcomed representatives from all 24 teams, sponsors, and key figures, including Roger Moult, Chairperson of the Veterans Cricket Association of South Africa, and Shafiek Noordien from the Western Province Cricket Association.
Levy-Hassen expressed pride in the event, saying, ‘I feel very proud and humbled. As a newly formed Exco appointed at the AGM on August 26, we had to hit the ground running with the season just around the corner. With fixtures, rules, sponsorships, and logistics to manage, we felt a formal launch was necessary and managed to pull it together in a short time. It was heart-warming to witness the camaraderie, the smiles, and laughter after a challenging few months as an association.’
Levy-Hassen also took the opportunity to thank her executive team, including Wesley Henry, Feroz Shaik, Barney De Klerk, Foazia Sylvester, Grant Jansen, Rodney Brown, and Carol Anne Van Vuuren, as well as sponsors J.C. Paleker of Tsitsikamma Water, Daniel French of Devils Peak Beers, and Neil Gillett of Rondebosch Sports Club. She also encouraged members and fans to follow the association’s newly launched website.

Growth and new rules for the season

The WPVCA, the largest veterans cricket association in South Africa, continues to grow, with the inclusion of four new teams—Yorkshire, United, Milnerton, and Rylands—bringing the total to 24 teams.

This season will also see the introduction of several new playing rules, including:

  • Power plays in the first six overs
  • No compulsory retirement when a batter reaches 50 runs
  • The use of an impact player

New website and club choice awards

The Exco also introduced a new website and implemented the ‘Club Choice Awards.’ In addition to the traditional ‘Man of the Match’ awards, captains will now rate and award the best umpire, scorer, bowler, batsman, and all-rounder at the end of each game. The competition will feature 24 teams split into two groups of 12, with each team playing 11 matches. The semi-finals and finals are scheduled for April 2025. Veterans cricket in Cape Town is held on Wednesday afternoons, with the first round of fixtures kicking off on October 9. For the latest news and full fixtures, visit www.wpvca.co.za.
