by WPVCA

Week 2 of Round 1 brought some great highlights and some amazing firsts. A whopping 428 runs scored in one game. We also saw the first tie for the 2024/25 season. The first century scored was by Mike Brown from Durbanville Cricket Club, and best bowling figures in a game with Rodney Dennis taking 7/15. The bar has once again been raised with many more great performances expected throughout the season.

Victoria vs Fish Hoek

Victoria hosted the gents from Fish Hoek. Vics won the toss and opted for the bat. The batting never really took shape, opener Neil van Vuuren made a go of it with 31(38), he was later joined by Bernard Mukondiwa also scoring 31(20). Simon O’Connell picked up 3 sticks, restricting Vics to 139 in the allotted 20. Fish Hoek opener, Craig Miller attempted to make easy work of the target, scoring 33(28) but Rodney Dennis had other ideas. He blazed through the batting order, picking up a staggering 7 wickets, leaving Fish Hoek all out for 67.

Primrose vs United

Primrose welcomed the lads from United back to the league. The hosts won the toss and decided to have a bat. Opener, Igsaan Damon got going early, falling just short of 50 on 46(35). He was joined by Faldie Abderouf, who with a few quick boundaries scored 27(15). The rest of the order unfortunately didn’t come off with Kashief Abdullah and Madjie Arend picking up 3 and 4 wickets respectively. Primrose ended on 152 in their 20. Faghri Emandien picked up 2 sticks but the gents from United never really got going with the bat. Middle order batsmen, Brent Paterson ended not out on 39(27) but United were unable to reach the target in their 20 ending 46 short on 106/4.

Western Province vs Montrose

Montrose visited Western Province at the Vineyard Oval, where they won the toss and took the bat. The Monties lads couldn’t quite find their rhythm. Captain, Mario Solomons attempted to stablise, contributing a solid 44(43) but the WPCC bowlers restricted the target to just 112 in the allotted 20.  Rory Millam and Graeme Cann each took 3 sticks. After a collapse upfront, middle order Quintin van der Westhuizen scored a solid 42(34) and Steve Palframan contributed 23(20) to stabilise the innings. Opening bowler, Devon Kriel managed 2 wickets and a run out but it wasn’t meant to be and WPCC achieved the target with 4 balls to spare.

Yorkshire vs Northerns Goodwood

Northerns Goodwood travelled to the South to face league newcomers, Yorkshire. The visitors won the toss and sent the hosts to the crease. Shaheen Pandie carried the innings with an impressive 53(34), supported by Fazlie Jaftha who ended not out on 35(24). The hosts posted 136 in their 20. The Northerns bowling attack was a mixed bag with Mark Beck picking up 2 sticks. The Northerns top order made easy work of the target with Jason Wright posting 45(38) and Vivian Engelbrecht top scored with an impressive 46(19) reaching the target with 4 overs to spare. Rashied Scello picked up the only 2 sticks of the innings.

Blue Bells vs Rondebosch

Rondebosch visited Rooikrans, where the hosts won the toss and opted for the crease. After 2 early wickets, Ismail Behardien top scored at 37(34) with support from Irfaan Sambo at 30(33), a bit of a mix from the rest of the order, leaving Rondebosch with a chase of 129. Paul du Plessis and Gavin Stander took 2 wickets a piece. Rondebosch then took to the crease with opener, Waseem Amien scoring 34(36) and Rushdi Salie coming later with 31*(41) bagging a win for the visitors, ending on 117 off the full 20. Moegamad Devajee picked up 2 wickets in his allotted 4 overs.

Claremont vs Durbanville

Arguably the most exciting of the fixtures this week, league giants Claremont and Durbanville faced off in a battle packed with highlights. With the “retire at 50” rule waived this season, Mike Brown scored the first century of the league with an impressive 105*(53), supported by fellow opener, Cassie Carstens with a solid 53(39) taking the target to a whopping 214. Ryan Cooper picked up 2 wickets in his 3. Claremont was not to be outdone. Openers, Brandon Nash, scoring 75(42) and Johan Taljaard’s 69(37) cemented the Claremont innings. The game came down to the wire with the last ball seeing much action, a missed field and clashing of the batsmen in the middle of the pitch meant the mammoth clash resulted in the first tie of the season. The second consecutive draw between these 2 sides. A truly brilliant show of cricket.

A great second week for Round 1 and we now head on to Round 2.
