The new season kicked off with a bang, the lads in group A set the tone recording 7 half centuries and a 5er in the first round. With runs and wickets aplenty, all but one home team recorded a win.
Brackenfell CC vs Wynberg CC
Brackenfell CC scored an impressive 170/4 against Wynberg CC. Man of the Match, Werner Moolman top scored with 69(52) and was supported by a quickfire 45(29) by Mark Gradwell. Craig Smith was the pick of the bowlers with 2/29 in his allotted 4 overs. Wynberg never got going, losing 5 wickets for only 25 runs. Hugo Liebenberg 34(27) and Craig Smith 25(26) added some respectability to the scorecard, however Wynberg only managed to reach 97/7 in their allotted 20. Brackenfell CC won convincingly by 74 and in so doing bagged a bonus point.
CTCC vs Strandfontein
The lads from Strandfontein arrived at the Boon looking for redemption. Cape Town won the toss and sent club newcomer and last season’s highest run scorer, Alwyn Williams to the crease to show his mattel. Captain, Willie Hantam soon joined him and together put on quite the show, Hantam contributing 78(45) and Williams 68*(48)..Strandfontein openers, Touffiek and Marlin Davids each picked up a stick. Cape Town posted 178/5. Hilary Dawson and Marlin Davids then put on a redeeming show, each scoring 33. Unfortunately SFCC fell short, ending on 147/3 but restricting Cape Town to a straight win, 5 runs short of the bonus point. Cape Town’s bowling attack seemed a bit scrappy, with Dale Hair and Brent Wanza eventually picking up a wicket each.
Mitchell’s Plain vs Saints
Mitchell’s Plain hosted the lads from St Augustine’s. The visitors elected to bat but unfortunately the openers failed to get going, both falling early. Shaun Roberts attempted to stablise, finishing on 23(16). Grant Scheepers made quick work of sending the middle order back to the dugout before Gavin Lomberg carried them through the remainder of the innings, contributing 21(26), setting an unconvincing 94/6. Mitchell’s Plain openers Ricardo Moses and Douglas Nienhaus held it out, posting 45*(45) and 44*(35) respectively, taking the win at 99/0.
Hanover Park vs Rylands
League debutants, Rylands CC popped over to Hanover Park where they posted 206/6, the highest total this week. The hosts won the toss and took the ball. Rylands’ top order showed their mattel, with opener Mohammed Ebrahim top scoring with 62(43). Shafwaan Doutie made good work with the ball, picking up 3 wickets in his 4 overs. Hanover Park quickly lost their top 3 before Nizaam (Bobba) Adams carried the batting attack, earning a half ton but the Rylands bowling attack proved formidable and Hanover Park fell 116 runs shy on 92/9.
Green Point vs Pinelands
Pinelands travelled to Green Point where they would face off against former teammate, Taariq Jakoet. Green Point opted to bowl, where the aforementioned went gung-ho, taking a fifer and restricting Pinelands to 90/8. Green Point openers Steven Westraad and Andrew Sheel held out scoring 53(23) and 23(19) respectively. Green Point picked up a win ending on 96/0.
Milnerton vs Ottoman
Ottoman travelled to league debutants, Milnerton where they were sent to the crease. Opener, Munier Enos fell just short of 50, whilst Craig Herman, home after a stint at Durbanville last season took 3 wickets and restricting Ottoman to 131/7. With a mixed bag from Milnerton, Leon Baird ended not out with a top score of 29(29). Abdurazaak Salie and Raafick Hassen each took a wicket but Milnerton were able to reach the target with 6 wickets to spare.
WPCC vs Blue Bells
The first of the group B fixtures saw Blue Bells visit Western Province. The visitors chose to bat. Grace Cann and Clyde Rossouw each picked up 2 wickets, restricting the boys in yellow to 114/7 in their 20. Openers, Francios Vermaak contributed an impressive 53*(38) with Jean Bence contributing 43(28) making easy work picking up the win with 9 wickets to spare.
A great start, we go again next Wednesday with the teams from group B going at it.
